PETA nails the Super Bowl ad formula: grab the attention, don’t pay $3 million

January 31st, 2009

Another Super Bowl, another banned PETA ad. NBC banned the latest ad, dubbed Veggie Love, from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for being too racy.

Everybody’s attention will be focused on the gridiron this afternoon. And that raises the perennial question: are Super Bowl ads worth the high price tags? Various sources suggest that the cost for a 30 second ad is now $3 million, up 10 percent from a year ago. By comparison, a World Series ad last year cost $392,000, according to TNS Media Intelligence.

The difference is a matter of eyeballs. The Super Bowl drew a record 97 million viewers last year. Ads for the Oscars, which drew 40 million viewers last year, cost about $1.67 million. NBC is expected to rake in $200 milion from the ads for the whole game, according to TNS.

The companies running commercials this year include Anheuser-Busch, Pepsi Cola and Coca Cola, H&R Block, Intel/DreamWorks Animation, GoDaddy, Career Builder, Cash4Gold, and Monster.com. Past advertisers such as Federal Express, General Motors and Garmin have pulled out, citing tough economic times.

I wonder if we’re hitting one of the peaks for such traditional media advertising. The Internet is stealing dollars away from traditional media. Internet ads are at least measurable. You can tell what kind of impact they’re having because a lot of the ads have some kind of direct call to action, such as clicking on an ad or getting people to sign up for something oniline.

PETA has of course hit on the right strategy with its Veggie Love commercial. They intentionally make an overly racy ad (in this case, lingerie-clad models showing their love for vegetables), the TV network rejects it, the uproar gets everybody’s attention, and then the PETA web site scores millions of hits from people who are curious about the banned video.

Are the Super Bowl ads a waste of money? Should brands spend their money online instead? Please leave your comments.

Takeoka Jidosha Kogei’s electric minicar gets slightly more macro, even more cute

January 31st, 2009
Takeoka Jidosha Kogei's electric minicar gets slightly more macro, even more cute
Japanese minicar manufacturer Takeoka Jidosha Kogei's Milieu R is the perfect car for anti-social folks, featuring only one seat and a range of 50km that's just enough to make your commute while being limited enough to get you out of going to the bar afterward. Thus far those who socialize only with (very) small animals have been left out of the company's offerings, but that all changes with this new prototype, the T10. It's ever so slightly larger, gaining 90mm in length and 40mm in width, making room for a shelf to the left of the driver's seat intended for some sort of pet (we're guessing hamster, possibly a petite guinea pig). The other specs, including that 50 km range and top speed of 55 km/h, stay the same, meaning there'd still be no concerns about getting to work early or having to socialize afterward, but we're not sure its charming looks make up for a price tag set to be somewhere north of ¥856,000 (about $9,520); awfully close to that of a "real" car. At least it looks a little safer than the HUVO.

For 40 minutes this morning, the Internet was all spam

January 31st, 2009

We’ve known for a while that there are a lot of bad websites out there that could damage your computer or wish to stealing your personal information. But this morning, it was revealed that 100 percent of all websites wished to do you harm — or at least, according to a little search site called Google that is.

Yes, between 6:30 AM PST and 7:35 AM PST, every single listing for every single search done through Google was flagged with the warning “This site may harm your computer,” Google’s vice president of search product and user experience, Marissa Mayer explained today on the Google Blog . While this was obviously an error — and a bad one — the blame game led to some further confusion.

Initially, Google noted that the site StopBadware.org provided its badware data (a listing of sites that intend to harm visitors), and seemed to indicate that being the root of the error. In fact, StopBadware.org does not provide Google with badware data, but instead simply helps Google come up with the cirteria for maintaining its own list. Google updated its post to clarify that it was in fact Google’s own fault and StopBadware.org wrote it own post on the matter as well.

Mayer notes that users who saw the erroneously flagged search results only encountered them for about 40 minutes or so. Still, it’s worth repeating that it was every single page that Google indexes on the Internet that was flagged as spam during that time period.

If Google does another round of layoffs , I have a feeling I know where they’ll start.

Ruby 1.9.1 Released

January 31st, 2009
Janwedekind writes "Yuki Sonoda yesterday announced the release of Ruby 1.9.1 (Ruby Inside coverage with lots of links). The VM of Ruby 1.9, formerly known as YARV, was initiated by Koichi Sasada and has been in the making for quite some time. Ruby's creator Yukihiro Matsumoto has already presented many of the upcoming features in his keynote at RubyConf 2007. Most notably, Ruby 1.9 now supports native threads and an implementation of fibers. A lot of work also went into encoding awareness of strings. The 1.9.1 version is said to be twice as fast as the stable 1.8.7. It will take some time though until the majority of existing Ruby extensions get ported to 1.9."

Difficult Times For SF Magazines

January 31st, 2009
Lawrence Person writes "Another speculative fiction magazine folds: Realms of Fantasy is ceasing publication. This comes hot on the heels of the announcement that the venerable Fantasy and Science Fiction will be moving from a monthly to a bimonthly schedule, and underscores what a tough environment this is for science fiction and fantasy magazines, all of which have suffered declining circulation for quite some time. This is a real problem, since short fiction is generally where new writers cut their teeth, appearing in print alongside their more famous peers. Given that a one-year subscription costs less than the average video game, those with an interest in science fiction might want to consider buying subscriptions to Asimov's, Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Analog. (Those in the UK might want to add Interzone and/or Black Static and Postscripts as well.)"

Adobe, Apple working together on Flash for iPhone (Aidan Malley/AppleInsider)

Aidan Malley / AppleInsider:

Apple teams up with Adobe for iPhone Flash at long last

January 31st, 2009

With Android getting all Flash-ey, Apple's "Goldilocks" position on Flash -- the full Flash player is too hefty, Flash Lite is too weak -- seemed pretty untenable. Now Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen has revealed that Apple and Adobe are "collaborating" on making Flash a reality on the iPhone, citing the technical challenge it presents. What's clear is that with all this work to do, it doesn't seem they're going the watered-down Flash Lite route, but we're trying not to hold our breath for a full-on, Hulu-friendly version that will finally help us get that Doogie Howser fix on the go. Naturally, there's no word on when this will hit.

Moblin 2 First Impressions

January 31st, 2009
nerdyH notes a DesktopLinux.com first look at the alpha of Intel's Moblin 2 toolkit for Linux distributors to create distributions for netbooks and other Atom-based kit. "A lot of notebooks and even netbooks these days run Windows, but also offer a minimalist Linux environment that boots in seconds. Now, with the Intel-sponsored Moblin project's alpha release of Moblin 2 Monday, it looks like insanely fast boots will become a standard feature of full-featured Linux desktops, too. Some of the quick-booting environments out there are enough to give anyone a lasting hatred of Linux. Like those free bicycles that liberal, well-intentioned municipalities release into the wild from time to time, hoping to get drivers out of their cars, fast-boot Linux is probably doing more to harm than help the cause. But pretty soon, even full-featured Linux will boot in seconds. That's because Intel's built some mighty whizzy read-ahead boot technology into Moblin 2."
